The project company Botnia Gas, owned by Gas1 Oy, has received an investment grant of nearly four million euros in the RePowerEU funding round. Botnia Gas is constructing, in two phases, one of Finland’s largest biogas plants in Kaustinen, Central Ostrobothnia. The grant applies to the first phase, which is designed for a feedstock volume of 35,000 tonnes.
“The next step is the construction decision, which we are approaching together with our selected investment partner. The goal is to finalize the details and secure the final investment decision by early 2025 at the latest. The ongoing investment under preparation totals €14.7 million, and the overall project cost estimate is around €50 million,” says Mika Kallio, CEO of Gas1 Oy, the owner of the project company Botnia Gas Oy.
The Botnia Gas biogas plant project will be located on the Kaustinen Fur Feed site. The plant is intended to process manure from the predominantly agricultural surrounding area, field biomasses, and fractions previously used in fur animal feed, for which there is currently recognized undercapacity in utilization.
The first phase of the biogas plant is expected to begin production in summer 2026.
