Gas1’s own biogas projects and projects developed by the company have applied for a total of approximately €58.2 million in investment support under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment’s funding programme for large demonstration projects. The three projects represent different approaches to developing biogas production: decentralised and modular production, utilisation of industrial synergies, and development of investment-ready projects in cooperation with partners.

Gas1 develops modular and decentralised biogas production

Gas1 has applied for €13.07 million in investment support for the Smart Modular Plants as a Decentralised Biogas Production Solution project.

The aim of the project is to develop a production model consisting of modular biogas reactors located at four different sites. Data from the reactors’ automation systems will be collected in a common data repository, enabling production to be monitored and optimised across the entire network with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

The objective is to develop an operating model in which decentralised biogas production can be integrated into common digital control and data management. This will make it possible to monitor and develop production at different locations as a single integrated entity.

Botnia Gas combines biogas with existing industry

Gas1’s wholly owned Botnia Gas has applied for €23.55 million in investment support for a project that has already been under development for several years.

The key starting point of the project is to build a large-scale biogas plant alongside an existing, operational feed kitchen. This solution enables significant synergies in raw material procurement, plant operations and energy use. At the same time, the need to transport biomass can be reduced and savings can be achieved in logistics costs.

The project has reached a stage where it is intended to proceed to financing negotiations and towards an investment decision.

Gas1-developed project in Säkylä progresses with new owner

Säkylän Biovoima, owned by Auris Bioenergia, has applied for €21.57 million in investment support for a project developed by Gas1 Oy and sold by Gas1 to Auris Bioenergia.

Gas1 will continue to cooperate with the new owner and will be responsible, among other things, for feedstock procurement and the plant’s main engineering.

The Säkylä project is an example of Gas1’s operating model, in which a biogas project is developed into an investment-ready entity and can subsequently be transferred to a new owner for implementation. However, Gas1 Oy’s role may continue during the later stages of the project through project planning, implementation and other expert services.

Three projects, one goal: bringing biogas projects towards implementation

The three funding applications illustrate Gas1’s approach to developing the biogas business. The projects combine technical development, local raw material streams, industrial synergies, digitalisation and commercial project development.

Gas1 Oy’s objective is to develop biogas projects from ideas and early-stage assessments towards a financeable and investment-ready entity, and to participate in their implementation and lifecycle development.

The combined value of the funding applications, approximately €58.2 million, is one indication of the scale of Gas1’s project development activities and the growing potential of biogas investments in Finland.

Investment grant applications are not investment grant decisions. The implementation and schedules of the projects depend, among other things, on funding decisions, financing and final investment decisions.
