The Finance Committee supports €11.6 million in aid.
The investment project long prepared by Kurikan Energia and Gas1 Oy received the Finance Committee’s approval for €11.6 million in investment aid. The aid is part of a package of major demonstration projects. The total investment in the project is estimated at €47 million.

The preparation work for the final investment decision will begin immediately. ‘This is a project aligned with the City of Kurikka’s strategy. Utilizing agricultural biogas has many positive effects in terms of the environment, the economy, and energy self-sufficiency. This is a significant development step in one of Finland’s largest agricultural municipalities. Project development has been carried out persistently since 2022,’ says Sami Keskinen, Chair of the Board of Kurikan Energia and Lännen Biokaasu.
Gas1, which has developed the project, considers the overall package highly investment-ready. ‘We believe that we will have a solid, investment-ready package in place by the autumn,’ adds Mika Kallio, CEO of Gas1 Oy.

“The prepared biogas ecosystem will accelerate the green transition in South Ostrobothnia and provide an excellent operating environment for circular-economy-driven business activities. The project is also estimated to generate approximately €10 million in additional complementary biogas investments on farms.
In the project so far, Gas1 has served as the enabler of technical and business development as well as the coordinator between different actors and functions. Kurikan Energia, in turn, has enabled the financial development of the project and provided the City of Kurikka’s ownership steering.
The project will build, in two phases, a large centralized liquefied biomethane plant complex in Ikari, Kurikka, offering local agricultural enterprises opportunities for the processing of manure fractions and field biomass. In addition, discussions have been held with local farms about collecting and receiving the biogas they produce for the centralized upgrading and liquefaction facility. The prepared biogas ecosystem will accelerate the green transition in South Ostrobothnia and provide an excellent operating environment for circular-economy-promoting business activities. The project is also estimated to generate approximately €10 million in additional complementary biogas investments on farms.
The gas will be liquefied in the immediate vicinity of the Jalastuuli service station, enabling us to offer heavy-duty traffic a refueling opportunity at one of Finland’s busiest hubs for heavy transport.
The final schedules have not yet been confirmed, but it is not out of the question that LBG refueling could already be possible in summer 2026. The full project entity is intended to be completed in 2028.
